How Movie Outings Are Extremely Selfish When You Are Sick

I can count on my fingers the number of times I've enjoyed a date night in the past few years. Our family has been through many trials and tribulations throughout this time. I had a life saving invasive brain surgery for Chiari Malformation where I had no flow of cerebral spinal fluid and my brain stem was fully compressed. I spent much time in a wheelchair and had to learn how to walk again and operate outside of compression. I had a second emergency brain surgery due to a massive super infection. There have been so many setbacks, such extreme and unbearable pain along with permanent neurological issues. Then we witnessed the recent premature birth of our beautiful grandchild at 29 weeks whom we are so blessed to have her in our lives. She is medically fragile, suffering from some medical setbacks including neutropenia (a disease of the white blood cells that disables her immune system from being able to fight off even a simple cold).

My body has been through so much, my immune system is extremely fragile and I am unable to fight off illnesses. Even a simple cold that lasts a few days for the average person can take weeks to months for my body to fight off as I continue to recover and battle procedures and surgeries.

This is the tiniest little fighter I know. We are so blessed to have her at home with us now. We have to be extremely careful not to bring any germs home to her until she can grow stronger and capable of fighting off illnesses.

As embarrassing as it can be, I have no choice but to wear a mask when I am out in public. People stare at me. People avoid me. People make rude comments directly to me. People stop me and ask if I'm contagious. People ask me why I'm out. I've had people scream at me when caught off guard from seeing a mask as they are playing with their phones (walking distracted) and happen to look up as we enter/leave a store at the same time. People are scared of me. People judge me and believe that I have some nasty funk that I'm going to give them which couldn't be further from the truth. I am simply trying to stay well and protect myself and the sweet little preemie at home.

Glamorous & Easy Nightstand Makeover for Maya's Nursery

One of the funnest parts of having a new baby on the way is planning a theme for the nursery. It's something you put lots of thought into as you want it to be absolutely perfect for your new little one. From the organizing to selecting your crib and colors, it can be a bit overwhelming. We have many wonderful ideas to share with you in making the process easier. We hope that you will enjoy some of the homemade projects we made to make Maya's nursery special including her glamorous new nightstand.

After many moves, this is the only heirloom piece I have left from a bedroom collection my wonderful MawMaw passed down to me. I decided that it would make a special addition to sweet Maya's nursery, but that it definitely needed a makeover. The nightstand was structurally sound, it just needed cosmetic repair. If you don't have a nightstand to pass down, check your local Goodwill, Thrift Stores and Yard Sales for one. Ignore the existing knob and paint, as you will be making this piece your very own.

Welcome Maya AriElle | NICU Fanatic

Dear Sweet Pinterest Fanatics,
We are overjoyed to announce the newest member of the Pinterest Fanatic Family, "Maya AriElle." When we announced we were growing, we never anticipated the complications that would follow, how scary it would be and how blessed we would become. As much as we love bringing you fun recipes, Pinterest projects and awesome new products, we found ourselves as NICU Fanatics. Precious Maya made her entrance into the world via emergency cesarean section at 29 weeks gestation. Our only glimpse at this little 2 lb 9oz fierce fighter would be from the chin down and we were so in love.

Maya amazed us everyday with her strength earning the nickname "Feisty" from all the nurses. We prayed for her so much and felt so blessed with every victory she made. We gained a new perspective for what Mother's go through when their babies are born early and how amazing it feels to see that graduation certificate from the NICU.

Adorable Girl's Pacifier Clips | #savvybaby

We are so excited for our little girl's arrival this October/November. But, so much has changed since my youngest was born over 15 years ago. We have been exploring, researching and stocking the nursery with all the greatest new baby products out there and having so much fun! Back when my son was born, there were barely any choices for pacifier clips. The few we had to choose from were basically made of a super thin ribbon that snapped to the pacifier by a button and had a bulky piece of plastic that covered a clip that left a hole in every outfit. They were really terrible! So, I was thrilled when I found out about Savvybaby's Pacifier Clips.

My Battle with Chiari Malformation

I'm back!

Hello Sweet Pinterest Fanatic Readers,
It's been a minute... Make that a year, which is a year too long! Oh how I've missed you! It's been a long, rough year - the toughest year of my life. The battle of a lifetime. This is me a year ago following major invasive brain and neck surgery.

Chiari Malformation, Brain Surgery, Thrive

My brain (specifically, the cerebellar tonsils) had herniated through the tiny opening of my skull (foramen magnum) into my spinal canal, filling this area like Jell-o into a Jell-o mold. This resulted in the crushing of my cranial nerves, compression of my brain stem and spinal cord along with blocking the flow of cerebral spinal fluid. This serious progressive Neurological Condition is known as Chiari Malformation. There is no cure and the only way to halt the progression of permanent damage is through an invasive brain surgery known as Posterior Fossa Decompression Surgery.

How Does This Happen?

Chiari Malformation (sometimes called, "Arnold Chiari Malformation") can be caused from a birth defect, such as being born with a skull that is too small to contain the brain or acquired from accidents, trauma and draining of fluid from the spinal canal or a combination of the above. Accidents can be detrimental to someone with Chiari, considering part of the brain is wedged into the spinal canal. It can amplify the pain and cause additional damage with only the slightest of trauma or jarring.
