Couponing can be very overwhelming especially if you have ever watched Extreme Couponing shows. I am sure most people are looking for ways to cut your grocery budget but are not sure where to start.

Let me tell you a little about how and why I started to use coupons. I worked at the same company for 10 years and I had a 1 1/2 year old son that was in daycare but was constantly sick and I was missing a lot of work to pick him up and take him to the doctor. So my husband and I decided it made more sense for me to be a stay at home mom. It was a hard adjustment and I wanted to feel like I was contributing since I wasn't bringing any money in.

I started looking at our expenses and realized how much we were spending on groceries. It was a lot and I knew that was an area I could work on and set a budget and start using coupons. I used to go to the store with no list and go down every aisle so I wouldn't forget anything. But I was also spending at least $100 a trip and 5:00 would roll around and I couldn't figure out what to make for dinner or I would be missing an ingredient.

So I started writing down some of my go to meals and favorite meals. I also started to look through all of my cookbooks and find new meals to try. I wrote the items I needed down. You can do a weekly or monthly menu. You can always change around the meals since you will have everything on hand. You will also not look into your cabinets with a blank stare everyday at 5:00 trying to figure out what you are going to make.

Grocery List:
It is so important to go to the store with a grocery list and stick to it as much as you can. I keep a page on my refrigerator that is dry erase and as soon as I run out of something or think of something I need for a recipe I add it to the list. Then every week when I go shopping I add those items to my grocery list. Creating grocery lists also helps you to stick to your grocery budget.

Coupons can save you so much money. You need to buy the paper every Sunday when there are coupons. Check Sunday Coupon Preview for a preview of the coupon inserts every week. You can also buy multiple papers if there are coupons that you know you will use. There are also great websites that you can print coupons from:
When you watch TV you can cut your coupons and put them in an expandable folder by sections. I put mine in order of the aisle that I shop at the most.  Then keep it with you that way if you have an unscheduled trip to the grocery store you will have your coupons.

Store Matchups:
There are so many different websites that do all of the work for you. They will tell you what is on sale, what coupon to use and the final price. Then print off your list of deals, clip the coupons you need and you are ready to go save your family money and cut your grocery budget.

Here are some of the websites I use:
Target deals-Totally TargetHip2Save
Walgreens deals- Hip2Save,  WildforWags
office stores- Hip2Save

I hope you start using coupons and don't feel so overwhelmed. Just start slow and a little bit saved adds up over time.
